Me and my wife are planning on traveling to visit the site of Chichen Itza together on our honeymoon in a couple weeks. But we are weary due to the high amounts of murders we are hearing on the television and that they are target tourists, even in the yucatan. has anyone gone recently? how safe do you think it is, thanks…we would be staying ata hotel near the site

well unfortunetly in all world we have violence, but if you take some caution you don´t have to be worried and if you go with a Tour is really safe, and the Tour Guide teach you a lot!!!

right now in Cancun is safe my Sister lives there and is secure….

you have to check whit some tour agent about the Chichen Itza Tour, they pick you at your Hotel and have a full day activity…. so could be a good option.

when I go to Cancun I take the http://www.cancun-transfers.net but they also have Tours and they can help you with rates and itinerary….or options….

I hope this info helps you and enjoy the Mexican Paradise… you are going to love the Caribbean and Congratulations for your Honeymoon!!

Tourists are rarely targeted for violence in Mexico, you do not have correct information. Go and have fun. Take your common sense, ie. don’t get crazy drunk and end up in a place you don’t know.

Mexico is as safe as you make it, as long as you don’t flash money or anger the locals, you should be perfectly fine.

I live in a way more dangerous part of Mexico than the place you wish to visit and so far I’ve been fine considering I’m a dainty tiny little white chick. It’s likely you will have a really nice time. That part of Mexico is really safe. Taking out of the equation the 5 or so cities in the complete opposite side of the country from Yucatan with a lot of drug violence, homicide rates in major American cities surpass most cities in Mexico.

Mexico City’s current homicide rate at around 12 per 100,000 people is equal to Los Angeles (which has only 50% of the population) and almost 3 times less than Washington DC (which has only about 20-25% of the population). Don’t trust the US tabloid media too much. They’d probably not make much news if they showed caps about regular life here like seeing locals pick fruit from a tree or going to the movies.
