I have a couple time share resorts available in Playa Del Carmen. Just wanted to gather opinions on them. The first is Mayan Palace Riviera (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150812-d295766-Reviews-Mayan_Palace_Riviera_Maya-Playa_del_Carmen_Yucatan_Peninsula.html)
The second is Grand Mayan Riviera Maya (http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150812-d569579-Reviews-The_Grand_Mayan_Riviera_Maya-Playa_del_Carmen_Yucatan_Peninsula.html)
I’m trying to pin down there exact location as many of these resorts have similar names. Are they both in the Playacar area and if so how far and convienent is it to get to the clubs down on Avenida Cinco? Also do they allow guests in the room?
They are the same. Same entrance, same grounds. The Grand Mayan has a couple of perks, special pool area and a few top of the line restaurants not open to Mayan Riviera guests. The Mayan Riviera is great. The Grand looked a little too rich for my blood. The Resorts are on MEX 307. About 18 miles south of Cancun. Puerto Morelos is 7 miles north of the resort and Playa del Carmen is 12 miles south of the resort. Playacar is 15 miles south. Everything is right off MEX 307, easy, safe drive. Guests in the rooms should not be a problem. The Grand Mayan may also have priority tee times on the golf course. I do not golf but the course runs throughout the grounds.
i stayed in the Riu Yucatan in Mexico and thought it was amazing the best hotel i stayed in and i go on holiday every year so that says something. The staff and Entertaiment team or (Animation Team) as they are known were great and really made the holiday. We may go back next year to the same hotel but if not and we find somewhere else to go we would love to stay at a RIU hotel again.
Just wanted to know if anyone else has stayed at a RIU Hotel before and i just wanted to know your thoughts?
Thanks xx
They are OK. I’ve been to a lot better. Try a different resort chain and see. But I’d advise staying away from the Riu in Cabo San Lucas. I know of two people who were raped there by employees and the resort didn’t even care. It was a horrible situation and now I refuse to go to the Riu in Cabo, or anywhere else.

I want to backpack for about 3 weeks in southern mexico (veracruz, yucatan peninsula) and then hop the border to belize and maybe gautamala and nicerauga…a lot of websites say that $30 a day is a good backpacking daily budget…other than my flight expenses to and from veracruz is that accurate?…btw I like to camp and will probably camp a night or two at the julapa river and maybe somwhere else…so I won’t need a hotel 3-6 nights…..p.s. sorry for the spelling of the the destinations I’m on my phone and to lazy to open another window and google spellings lol.
Mil- thanks for the input but I think your exagerating a little lol…my buddy frequents mexico and comes back fine every time… you are letting the fear mongering get to you lol….and also I think you should see somebody about your anti-american sentiment…after reading your other answers its a little scary man…
Some people who do mexico + central america do the bamba bus:
http://www.bambaexperience.com/hopon-hopoff.php
this isn’t cheap, and maybe you prefer local buses but you do have the advantage of all your travel being paid for in advance. for local buses within mexico check out:
so you can see prices, journey duration etc and so forth.
I would make sure that you have a little extra money than planned…as the backpacking budgets given in the guide books generally rely on always choosing the cheapest options available (taco stands not restaurants, dorms not hotels etc etc). You would definitely have to use dorm rooms etc. also the 30 dollars a day should be fine for living, but not transport (depending how often you want to move around). Loads of hostels offer some great tours which may or may not be your thing, but they aren’t too expensive and its a good way to see a bunch of stuff in one day.
id definitely say try to get to oaxaca, its not too far from veracruz (considering size of mexico!) and was one of my fave places. I did the backpacking thing last year,(am now living up north in monterrey) and the backpacker route is safe enough. i can’t advise you on camping as ive never done it
