Hi I’m wondering what is a good cheap hotel to stay in Merida? cheap, clean, safe, in a fun location where there’s some nightlife. Also, I’m flying into Cancun airport and wonder if I should rent a car or take the 1st class bus. I’ve heard the bus is $25 each way and I can rent a car for about $135 / week, but I don’t know how expensive gas is, how much the toll road costs, if it’s hard to find parking spaces in Merida, the likelihood of having the car broken into, etc. Sorry for this run on question. I’ll probably take the bus and my main concern is where to stay in Merida.

There are 3 levels of buses run by ADO between Cancun and Merida, The regular ADO bus is about $240 peso, for a little more comfort there is ADO GL for about $290 pesos and the Platino luxury bus is about $400 pesos. All are good, I would suggest taking the one that fits best with your schedule. If it works out that any of the two upper end buses fit your schedule I personally would pay the extra few dollars for them but that is just me. The Taxi from the Cancun airport should cost you about $200 pesos or there is a bus I think for $80 pesos. And the final detail on the bus option – you want a bus that ends at the CAME station in Merida if you are staying at either hotel mentioned later.

If you can get that good of a rate on a rental car, it will give you more flexibility obviously. Gas is about 8 pesos a litre. I think that works out to about $2.30 a gallon. The toll road from Cancun to Merida would be about $320 pesos each way.

There is parking in Merida, chances are your hotel would include parking (and any parking lot will have security). You can usually find street parking. In the very core of the historical centro you will likely need to pay for parking but it is cheap, 5 or 10 pesos an hour. I have never had a car broken into in Mexico.

The recommendation for luz en yucatan is a good one. If that doesn’t work out for you you can try the dolores alba as a second choice.

Nightlife could be any one of Merida’s many squares depending on the night but two good bets would be at or near the Zocalo (aka Plaza Grande or main square ) or for more of a night club thing then the Paseo de Montejo has lots of bars and restaurants. You could walk to either from either hotel mentioned.

Enjoy.

Visitmex Vive México Visit Mexico Located in southeastern Mexico on the Yucatan Peninsula. Borders the states of Campeche and Quintana Roo. Yucatan has a hot and humid climate. During your stay, you can visit the state capital, Merida, where you can take a stroll down Paseo Montejo, the city’s main avenue, which is lined with beautiful palaces, old buildings and 19th-century mansions. All that and much more makes the so-called White City one of the most visited destinations in the country. In the surrounding areas, you can visit old henequen haciendas, many of which have been converted into luxurious hotels with museums, restaurants and spa services.

You can also visit the town of Valladolid, where you’ll find numerous sinkholes (ponds connected by underground streams), the ideal spots to go swimming or cave diving. There’s also the magical town of Izamal, where you can check out the magnificent Ex-Convent of San Antonio de Padua, which has the largest atrium in the Americas.

In this state you can also visit the interesting Mayan archaeological zones, such as Uxmal, Kabah, Labna, Sayil, Dzibilchaltun and the impressive ceremonial grounds of Chichen Itza, which was declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. Among the notable sights there are the Observatorio (Observatory), also known as the Caracol, the Juego de Pelota (Ball Court) and the Piramide de Kukulcan (Pyramid of Kukulcan), where you can witness the shadow image of a plumed serpent descend on the pyramid’s stairs every spring equinox.

Yucatan also offers beautiful natural environments, such as Celestun, the natural habitat for hundreds of pink flamingoes, or Ria Lagartos, where you can go kayaking through the mangroves. During you visit, don’t forget to try the Yucatan’s famous regional cuisine.

Wednesday, September 15, 2010, marked the 200th Anniversary of Mexico’s Independence. On this day, in Merida, Yucatan, the traditional grito was moved from the Plaza Grande to the Monumento de la Bandera (sometimes known as the Mayan Monument). We ventured up Paseo to the monument, only to see the massive crowds were present. Knowing that we’d be stuck in a sea of humanity at the end of this event, we took shelter back down Montejo, at the Tequila Tasting Party in Rosas y Xocolate.

EL MEJOR MOMENTO PARA VOLAR, SOBRE LAS RUINAS MAYAS Y LA SELVA Y TODA LA FAUNA QUE TIENE YUCATAN, ES A LAS 6:00 AM, YA QUE A ESA HORA NO HAY MUCHO VIENTO NI BRUMA, Y NO HAY NADA MEJOR QUE VER DESDE LAS ALTURAS LOS DIFERENTES ECOSISTEMAS QUE TIENE. LA RIVERA MAYA ES UNO DE LOS ECOSISTEMAS MAS UNICOS Y FRAGILES DEL MUNDO, LA CONSTRUCCION DE MILES DE CUARTOS DE HOTEL AL AÑO, ESTA ACABANDO CON NUESTRO MAYOR TESORO Y CON ESO LLEVA A QUE EL MAR LLEGUE INCLUSO HASTA LAS PAREDES DE LOS HOTELES, POR LA MISMA EROSION QUE ESTAMOS CAUSANDO. Y COMO OLVIDAR A BRYAN EL MONO QUE LOS DUEÑOS QUE TUBO ANTERIORMENTE LE QUITARON TODOS SUS DIENTES, AFORTUNADAMENTE PARA BRYAN, SOLO FUERON SUS DIENTES DE LECHE, BYAN FUE VICTIMA DE LA AVARICIA DEL HOMBRE, POR GANAR DINERO, AL SEER USADO COMO OBJETO DE DIVERSION Y ENTRETENIMIENTO PARA LOS TURISTAS DE CANCUN, AHORA TIENE UN MEJOR FUTURO YA QUE SU NUEVO HOGAR SERA MONKEY WORLD.

THE BEST TIME TO FLY, ON THE JUNGLE AND THE MAYA RUINS AND ALL THAT HAVE WILDLIFE YUCATAN, ES AT 6:00 AM, because at that TIME NO WIND OR MIST LOT, AND THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN THE VIEW FROM HEIGHTS TO HAVE DIFFERENT ECOSYSTEMS. LA RIVERA MAYA IS ONE OF THE MOST UNIQUE AND FRAGILE ECOSYSTEMS OF THE WORLD, THE CONSTRUCTION OF THOUSANDS OF ROOMS OF HOTEL YEAR RUNNING WITH OUR MAYOR TESORO AND THAT LEADS TO THE SEA EVEN COME TO THE WALLS OF HOTELS BY EROSION WE’RE THE SAME CAUSE. BRYAN AS A FORGET THE MONKEY THAT YOU TUBE ABOVE OWNERS TAKE ALL THEIR TEETH, Fortunately for Bryan, were only his baby teeth, Byan WAS VICTIM OF GREED OF MAN, BY MAKE MONEY, THE SEER USED AS OBJECTS OF FUN and entertainment for the resort of Cancun, NOW HAVE A BETTER FUTURE AND YOUR NEW HOME WILL BE MONKEY WORLD.
